Sophia:
Like, uh... I have been looking at power figures, the stuff's cool.

Sophia:
Nkisi nkondi were figures used by the Kongo people to drive away evil forces. They'd insert nails and stuff to signify sealed pacts, crimes, all sorts of stuff.

Sophia:
It feels very symbolic. Art is like, all symbolic. I think. Uh...

David:
So... a personal agreement on meaning?

Sophia:
Eh-yea... Symbols can be personal. Sooo they can look confusing. I guess
that's why you're trippin'?

Sophia:
Like... you can look at art as an artifact.

David:
Artifact?

Sophia:
Yeah like a mark in time, so they're "useful" in that way...

David:
Oh.
Right.

Karen:
Yerrr notes?

Sophia:
Trends come and go.
People painted things realistically before the advent of the camera.
Paving the way for abstract paintings to make things more deep...

Sophia:
Yeah Karen mentioned your notes. You will probably like this more.

Sophia:
I want my art to feel deep and connect with me and others in some way. Symbols are important...

Sophia:
Like they're shortcuts for a feeling or idea. Making your own sounds fun...

I found the Nkisi Nkondi stuff very interesting. Readers, worth a google.

I really like this page, it's getting into the themes of the work (I think?) and the studying of the meaning of symbols, the intepretation of art, it's all fascinating to think about.
